Radio in an art context: Radio Neverno

By Hans Kuiper

After some time I am involved again in a radio project, this time at the exhibition called, ''Tomorrow never knows'. at Arti et Amicitiae. The project runs from June 5th till July 5th.

Radio in an art context. In the other halls of the exhibition there are 'sub curators' able to plan their own program during the one month exhibition time. That concept can make the exhibition very dynamic, because it changes every week. Also at Radio Neverno, we every week have new guests and a new program, contributing to the dynamic concept of the curators who invited curators.

Round table discussion with art initiators from 'Open Art Route Zuidoost', W139 and Lucas Mertens, a house gallery, with active public participation.

I made up three names, one of them Radio Neverno and Moritz Ebinger, with who I do this project, thought also this the best name. Elsewhere I wrote on the concept of online radio nowaydays. Is it still working? Who is listening, on what moment? Is live streaming still working today?

Gover Meis is performing in the installation built by Tiny Domingos. Visitors (among them some people working for Arti et Amicitiae, the art club harbouring the exhibition) enjoying the show.

Moritz and I both are experienced radio program makers. I know that online radio, when it is not communicated properly will not be able to build up a public easily. And that there are people listening live often might proof to be an illussion. Podcast radio might be the best, when you don't have a big budget to be more or less omnipresent, some say. But doesn't online or podcast radio have potential in specific communities, like the art community? Can we create a vibe on the spot (the live radio performance) and online (the podcasts) and thus build up an involved community?

Artist Tiny Domingos interviews visitors on their vision on the Future, the main theme of the exhibition. Domingos created a horoscopic installation on hwich basis he discusses with visitors.

For me radio is part of a bigger networking activity which runs in and outside the radio studio. ideally, you talk to artists every day and you'll understand more about their visions and work. This is all background information of great value to be able to gain more depth in your programs. I also invited some artist of my own network, to integrate them in the show and actively participating in enlarging networks. Moritz Ebinger, my radio partner, does the same.

Member and non members of Arti et Amicitiae enjoying the live show.

In Radio Neverno, I explore the role of networking within a specific artistic community for a month and reassess the potential of radio within this. Will participants feel a connection with the project? Will they listenonce in a while to a podcast? Is unfinanced community radio that really adds something possible? These are questions playing through my mind.

First interviews at Radio Neverno!

By Hans Kuiper

Even before the opening of the show we conducted our first interviews. 'Presentation platformGaston Ter Horn (from M4 Gastateliers) and Künstler und Projektrauminitiator Tiny Domingos (Rosalux, Berlin) talked about thier projects and perspectives.

Thursday afetrnoon, I am working on getting the studio work, to create some sound, together with Ed, the technical assistant from Arti et Amicitiae, while Moritz is exploring his newly acquired old skool iPod that he wants to use for the project.

Tiny Domingos pops in, he just arrived in Amsterdam from Berlin. A short glance at the exhibition room and off he is to find wood for building a structure in the room.  Everywhere people work in the rooms next door, for making a great opening show at June 5th, 'Tomorrow Never Knows', the last Jubilee Year Show of Arti et Amicitiae, founded 175 years ago and situated at the Rokin in Amsterdam.

It is always a surprise how a radio project goes, technically as with guests. Some guests cancel their appointment for an interview, totally new ones pass by. So the project already starts a day before the official opening.

After having worked the whole day, Moritz, Tiny and me have diner in the nice restaurant of the art club. Artist Freddy Beckmans passes by, shows his tattoos from his Berlin years, he used to be a frequent visitor of Berlin and tells crazy stories on the 80's in German to us. German becomes the language of our first interviews, as Moritz ' native language is originally Schweizer Deutsch and Tiny and I are used to talk in German.

Soon this German podcast will be online, here on the blog and at our soundcloud page, Tomorrow never Knows, you know...but Radio Neverno already started!

RADIO NEVERNO: podcast radio or streaming radio?

By Hans Kuiper

Moritz Ebinger and I had a discussion whether it would make still sense to stream radio with knowing almost for sure that there will not be a large audience at the actual moment of streaming.

Next to solving the technical problems facing streaming, which appear not to be that complex nowadays, although you have to be somewhat tech savvy, is it worth all the effort and costs?

The budget for the radio station (can we still use this name or should we use the words podcast station?) is so low that first we could not broadcast in a traditional way (yes we could have, but who will pay and how) and second we are only able to communicate the project mainly in social media.

Another solution is then to do the interviews, live, record them and put them online afterwards. Then you can communicate it as an archive of interviews with artists and performance registrations.

So, the focus becomes twofold: first the event as a performative event, in a hall with public and guests that do performances and second putting the podcasts online. The traditional 'radio concept' (so traditional ethereal broadcasting or even streaming online radio) is subverted, it also seems outdated more and more, as people don't tend to listen to programs that long anymore.

I did some resarch and interviews with how people use radio nowadays. In the Netherlands, most people only listen to radio in their car, while driving. Then they, next to listening to services like Spottify on their media player, also listen to a selection of stations, pre selections to be more specific. As a newcomer you don't seem to have much chance if you are not able to generate advertising or better communicative power to get your message accross that you are actually making radio on the spot.

Well, an illussion less? No, the project only transforms. First in our minds, second, during the actual project, that will take 4 weeks. Capitalism dictates the conditions of production also here? Or is that a rather simple way of blaming others in stead of taking your own responsibility and work a little harder? Online radio still faces challenges of really reaching a public, combined with making interesting content so they will come back.

We will have fun anyhow, but building a streamin or even ethereal art radio station that really attracts a steady public requires a huge amount of energy, people and...yes, money.
